This used my favourite model. He is holding a human skull, a real one, since incorporated into a more complex work. I make backgrounds and leave them around until an image comes to me, or I impose one on top, usually allowing the underlying paint to show through to a degree, focusing on the fact that this is art, artfully fabricated. Gel is added to the memento mori to make it glisted and slightly 3-D, to assert its omnipresence.
