When van Gogh went to a casually run art school in Paris, the students took turns to act as model to make tuition cheaper. This is derived from the famous artist's only extant life-drawing of a male nude. There must be images of him when he posed too, so by reddening the hair on this figure the implication is that he took part properly in the camaraderie and earnestness.
