The Tanner Stage is a way of assessing physical development, specifically covering the years from prepubescence to sub-adulthood. It is named for the doctor that devised it. It also refers to an old sixpence, a small coin of little value and to a possible profession for the protagonist, though he refuses to work. The object above is a moon, a virus, whatever.
