There is a dangerous path to be trodden when it comes to naming things according to the dominant pigment. This was a considerable time ago and the darkness is more a case of psychology than anything else. The issue is much more that this so subverts, say, the Venus of Urbino, and all those other passive female nudes portrayed by heterosexual men in the past.
